The United States dollar (symbol: $; code: USD) is the official currency of the United States of America. It is also considered the legal tender for Ecuador, El Salvador, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau, East Timor and Zimbabwe. The US dollar is subdivided into 100 cents and commonly used denominations are $1, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100 bills and 1¢, 5¢, 10¢, 25¢ coins. The U.S. dollar was adopted as the official and principal unite of currency in 1972 after the U.S. Constitution was ratified, when congress passed the "Mint Act."
