According to Reuters, the volume of container imports to the U.S. took a sharp decline in August and September 2022.
Article summary:
Historically, 25% of imported goods were packed and transported in large shipping containers as opposed to smaller shipments. Container-sized shipments surged nearly 40% during the pandemic, as consumers replaced spend on experiences with binge shopping.
The surge clogged ports, caused delays and further fueled consumer demand and price increases.
With a lot of those large shipments finally processed at the ports, large U.S. retailers are faced with an excess of goods and a reduced appetite to re-order in the short term.
